Historical Background of CIECOBON
The Chartered Institute of Export and Commodity Brokers of Nigeria (CIECOBON) was established to promote professionalism in export trade, commodity brokerage, and trade development in Nigeria. The institute was created to strengthen standards, support structured learning, and build a stronger export ecosystem through membership, education, research, and collaboration.
Origin of the Institute
The idea of establishing a professional body dedicated to export and shipping in Nigeria was first discussed during the Nigerian Shippers Council Conferences held in Lagos in 1980 and Port Harcourt in 1981.
At the time, most professional organizations operating in Nigeria were branches of foreign institutions based in the United Kingdom. These included the Chartered Institute of Transport, the Institute of Transport Administration, the Chartered Institute of Ship Brokers, and the Chartered Institute of Marine Engineers.
These discussions highlighted the need for Nigerian institutions that would focus on the development of the country’s maritime sector, export trade, and international business relations.

The Institute of Export of Nigeria
The Institute was founded on Tuesday 29th May 1990 and incorporated on 4th May 1992 with registration number 6690.
IOEN metamorphosed to Charter body on Thursday 30th March 2017.
Institute of Export of Nigeria Established
On 29th May 1990, the Institute of Export of Nigeria was established to focus on export trade development and international business practices.
Official CAC Registration
The Institute of Export of Nigeria was formally registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on 4th May 1992 with Registration Number RC 6690.
Transformation to CIECOBON
Following approval by the National Assembly, the Institute evolved into the Chartered Institute of Export and Commodity Brokers of Nigeria (CIECOBON), expanding its mandate to include commodity brokerage.
Charter Bill Re-presented
The Charter Bill for the Institute was re-presented to the National Assembly as Bill Number HB1262 to strengthen its legal recognition and operational framework.
The Institute Today
The Chartered Institute of Export and Commodity Brokers of Nigeria (CIECOBON) serves as a professional platform for exporters, commodity brokers, maritime operators, bankers, and other professionals involved in international trade.
The Institute provides education, professional training, certification, and examinations to equip practitioners with the knowledge and skills required for effective export practice and commodity brokerage.
Governance Structure
The affairs of the Institute are administered by a Governing Council supported by various boards, committees, and branches. Members of the Council are democratically elected during the Institute’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
